Coronavirus Spikes, Hospitalizations Worry Texas Health Officials

Texas reported 9,048 new cases and 126 additional deaths amid a seven-day trend of growing hospitalization rates and diagnoses.

AUSTIN, TX — Texas reported 9,048 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday with 126 new deaths, prompting concern among health officials about fatality spikes and rising hospitalizations.

The latest data were input by Texas Department of State Health Services officials. On Twitter, health officials expressed concern over a seven-day spike in new cases and hospitalizations, noting that capacity at medical facilities is now a growing concern.

According to the agency, Texas averaged in the last seven days:

  • 6,223 new cases per day;
  • 5,740 current hospitalizations; and
  • 89 new fatalities reported per day.

Since the onset of respiratory illness, an estimated 926,400 positive cases have been diagnosed as illustrated in a Texas Department of State Health Services statistical dashboard that is updated daily. The data also show some 18,320 people in Texas have died after succumbing to the illness since the pandemic swept across the state in the early part of the year.
