AUSTIN, TX — The ascension of Austin Mayor Pro Tem Delia Garza to the post of Travis County Attorney is a foregone conclusion as she face no opponents. Despite the anti-climactic nature of the ultimate vote count, the election is significant given its potential reverberations on local policing and criminal justice reform.

Polls opened in Texas at 7 a.m. and closed at 7 p.m.

In the waning months of her tenure on the Austin City Council, Garza emerged as a vocal critic of tactics used by the Austin Police Department as they responded to protesters rallying for reform of the agency. Coming after high-profile deaths of civilians at the hands of police, the protests that were sparked in May and continued for months afterward shed a light on the growing calls for police reform.
