Mayor's Plans to End Veteran Homelessness Halted

The deadline has moved from Veteran's Day to Dec. 31.

The mayor’s ambitious plans to end veteran homelessness by Veteran’s Day has come to a screeching halt.

Ann Howard, director of Ending Community Homelessness Coalition (ECHO), announced that the November 11 deadline is being pushed back to December 31. More time is needed because of the large number of homeless veterans in the city and a housing program with a ceiling of only $800.

“There is a feeling of an unknown situation coupled with the fact that this is a hard rental market,” Adler told KEYE TV.

Mayor Steve Adler announced a plan to end veteran homelessness by Veterans Day in August. According to Howard, the number of homeless veterans grew from 234 in January to 500 in August. While about half are housed, property owners tend to be reluctant to rent to veterans.
