Eliana Wainscott, a student at Cano Freshman Academy, won third place in the South Texas Book Festival Bookmark Contest.
The South Texas Book Festival holds hold annual events, including bookmark and writing contests, to combine literacy and children’s entertainment in a festive atmosphere that promotes a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.

This year’s competition theme was Celebrate, in honor of the McAllen Public Library’s 10th Anniversary.
Wainscott competed in the age 14-18 category and was one in three students across the Rio Grande Valley to be honored at an awards ceremony in December at the McAllen Library auditorium.
In recognition of her win, several hundred copies of Wainscott’s bookmark design will circulate throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
