Astros, Yordan Álvarez Agree To 6-Year Contract Extension: Report
The 6-year, $115 million deal begins next season and buys out the 2021 ALCS MVP's final three arbitration-eligible seasons.
HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros and slugger Yordan Álvarez agreed to terms on a 6-year, $115 million contract extension, league sources told ESPN's Jeff Passan.
The contract will take effect next season, according to the report.
Álvarez's 2021 salary is $764,600, and the extension means he and the team will avoid three seasons of salary arbitration, according to Spotrac.

Álvarez was unanimously named AL Rookie of the Year in 2019 after hitting .313 with 27 home runs in 87 games. He played just two games in 2020 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in his right knee.
He bounced back with a career-high 33 home runs in 2021 and was a key contributor in the Astros' postseason run to the World Series, where they fell in six games to the Atlanta Braves. Álvarez hit .314 with two home runs in 54 at-bats and was named 2021 ALCS MVP after going 12 for 23 in six games against the Boston Red Sox.

Álvarez, the Astros' designated hitter who also plays left field, is currently tied for third in the league this season with 14 home runs. He's hitting .272 with 31 runs batted in and a .941 OPS.
In 278 games across parts of four big league seasons, Álvarez has 75 career home runs.
