City Awards Zika Abatement Contract To NOLA Construction

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston City Council approved an ordinance awarding a contract to NOLA Construction & Development Group, LLC for Zika Abatement Debris Removal Service.

NOLA Construction & Development Group, LLC has collected 12,000 cubic yards and 800 cubic yards of illegally dumped tires from chronic sites around the city and properly dispose in approved landfills.

In partnership with the Houston Health Department, the Solid Waste Management Department wants to clean up illegal dumpsites to avoid the growth of rats, insects and other vermin which may pose a health risk to our communities.

The clean-up is focusing primarily on the 5-areas identified by Mayor Sylvester Turner as part of the Complete Communities Initiative: Acres Home, Gulfton, Second Ward, Near Northside and Third Ward.

“We want to take precautionary measures and collect illegal dump piles as soon as possible. If you witness illegal dumping in progress contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS with information such as vehicle license plate number, year and make; and, description of the persons involved.” Turner said “We ask again this year, please help us fight Zika by taking the following steps to reduce potential breeding sites near your home.”

Residents can help by:

• Eliminating all standing water from their property
• Removing all trash; mosquitoes can breed in areas as small as a water bottle cap.
• Making sure to empty water from discarded tires and separate them from the rest of your junk waste pile at the curb.
• Reporting illegal dumping sites by calling 3-1-1.
• Utilizing Neighborhood Depository/Recycling Centers listed below to dispose of heavy trash if you miss the collection date in your neighborhood.

Don’t forget to follow the three D's of mosquito defense: drain, dress, DEET! Drain standing water and keep hedges trimmed. Dress in long pants and long sleeves, keep windows and screens repaired and use air conditioning. When outside spray exposed skin with mosquito repellent containing DEET, reapply as necessary and use netting to protect babies in strollers or car seats.
