Harris County Jail Inmate Dies In Custody

A Harris County inmate died early Wednesday of an apparent suicide. His death is under investigation by the Texas Rangers.

HOUSTON, TX -- The Texas Rangers are investigating the apparent suicide of a Harris County Jail inmate Wednesday morning found hanging in his jail cell.

Eldon Lee Jackson, 61, was found unconscious at about 1:18 a.m. by detention officers.

He was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital here he was pronounced dead.

Jackson was arrested April 15 on several felony charges, including burglary, arson, violation of a protective order, and assault of a family member.

Officials said he was being held in private cell because a court order banned him from having access to a telephone.

A detention officer checked on Jackson less than 20 minutes before he was found, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is conducting an autopsy and will release an official cause of death.
