1. The Bissell Pet Foundation has awarded the Houston SPCA a $20,000 "Healing Heartworm" grant that will cover the cost of treatment for 100 dogs with heartworm disease who have been rescued by the Houston SPCA. The program will begin immediately. (CultureMap Houston)
2. A 12-year-old boy is recovering from serious wounds after he was hit by a stray bullet while he was sleeping during a shootout that occurred at a nearby club in northwest Harris County, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. SWAT was called out Thursday morning over the incident, but no one was arrested there. (ABC 13)
3. A woman who said she was pregnant while attending Travis Scott's deadly Astroworld Festival is suing Scott, Live Nation and other event partners, claiming the crowd surge caused her to lose her baby. Shanazia Williamson and Jarawd Owens have filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking “monetary relief significantly in excess of $1 million,” according to documents. (Click2Houston)
4. During a May 11 meeting, Houston City Council approved a $20,432 purchase for maintenance and repair services for two odor control towers for the 11th Street Lift Station Wastewater Plant. Complaints about the odor appear to be an ongoing issue. (Community Impact News)
5. Texas social media influencers, including those in Houston, were disappointed this week when Meta turned off augmented filters for them this week after a lawsuit was filed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accusing the company of misusing facial recognition technology. Influencers protested the change with hashtag #nofilter. (KHOU 11)
