City Partners With NASA For Houston's Freedom Over Texas Event

The annual Freedom Over Texas July 4th Celebration will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing , officials announced.

HOUSTON — Houston’s annual July Fourth Freedom over Texas celebration, will have a special meaning for Houstonians. This year, the City of Houston and NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake are partnering to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

On July 20, 1969, Astronaut Neil Armstrong spoke the first words from the lunar lander,
“Houston, Tranquility base here. The eagle has landed.”

“As a native Houstonian, I am thrilled, delighted to see America’s iconic space program featured in this iconic civic event,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said. “NASA’s Johnson Space Center is a tremendous economic engine for Houston, and we are proud of the NASA story…”

The event, dubbed “the Space City Experience,” celebrates Houston’s relationship with NASA, and will provide Houstonians a close encounter with NASA robotics, astronauts and a virtual reality field trip to the International Space Station.

The event will also feature country music stars Jake Owen and Kellie Pickler, as well as a number of regional musical acts and an out of this world kids zone.

Freedom Over Texas runs 4-10 p.m. July 4. Tickets are $5 online through May 31 at freedomovertexas.org, $8 online June 1-July 3 and $10 day of show. Children ages five and younger are free. The event will also be simulcast on ABC-13.
