METRO, Lyft Offer Safe Ride Home On New Year's Eve

Celebrate New Years Eve 2019 and take a safe ride home with Lyft and METRO.

HOUSTON, TX — New Year’s Eve is Monday, and local organizations are offering free rides and or reduced prices to help everyone celebrating make it home safe for 2019.

Houston METRO is among those offering free rides on New Year’s Eve, the program starting at 6 p.m. New Year's Eve (Dec. 31) and running until 6 a.m. New Year's Day (Jan. 1) on local bus, METRORail and METROLift.

Meanwhile, Lyft is teaming up with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, AAA, and Silver Eagle Distributors in Houston and San Antonio for the 2019 Plan Ahead, Ride Safe initiative.

“New Year’s Eve is a time when people reflect on the past and plan for the year ahead,” Kevin Lilly, TABC Chairman said in a press release. “If their plans include celebrating with family and friends, we want to ensure they have planned ways to safely get home...”

To help Texans make smart choices after ringing in 2019, the “Plan Ahead, Ride Safe” initiative is providing $5 off Lyft rides across the state. Texans can claim their discount by using promo code NYEPLAN18 in the Lyft app.The new “Plan Ahead, Ride Safe” campaign will provide tips and ideas on ways for Texans to stay safe.

“One alcohol-related death on Texas roads this New Year’s is too many,” Kaleb Miller, Lyft Gulf Coast General Manager said in a statement. “Reducing drunk driving takes a concerted effort, and we are thrilled to partner with Anheuser-Busch, AAA, TABC and Silver Eagle Distributors to help make the first decision of the 2019 a responsible one - take sober ride home with Lyft.”
