Scammers Spoofing FBI Phone Numbers In Extortion Scheme

The FBI is warning residents of a scam that involves callers posing as federal agents who threaten arrest if a fine is not paid.

HOUSTON, TX – If you get a phone call from someone who claims to be an FBI agent and you have an overdue fine, do not fret. Too much. Most likely, it's part of a scam being reported across the Houston area, federal agents say.

In the scam, callers say they are with the FBI or U.S. Marshals office. The phone number they use even looks real, but actually is just a spoofed FBI number. The callers tell potential victims that they missed jury duty or committed a minor offense. Victims are told they can avoid fines by buying a prepaid debit card or gift card.

When the card is purchased, the caller has the victim read the card number over the phone to satisfy the fine.
FBI officials said the scammers may use other tactics to bolster their credibility with victims, such as providing badge numbers or other information.

Most police departments, including the FBI, will not resort to phone calls or send emails demanding money, payment or threaten arrest, according to the press release.

The FBI encourages anyone contacted by a caller claiming to be with the FBI to verify the information with the Bureau’s closest field office. The main telephone number for the FBI Houston Field Office is 713-693-5000.
