Flood Watch And Tornado Warning For Houston, Surrounding Areas

Houston and the surrounding areas are under a flood warning and a tornado watch until 11 a.m.

HOUSTON, TX -- Street flooding and power outages will kick off the day for many Houstonians after a line of heavy thunderstorms moved through the Houston area early Thursday morning. Storms moved through the area at about midnight with much of the rain letting up by about 6 a.m.

At 5 a.m., the National Weather Service issues a flood advisory for residents in Harris, Montgomery, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Washington, Polk, Liberty, and San Jacinto Counties until 8 a.m.

  • Brenham
  • Humble
  • Katy
  • Richmond,
  • Tomball
  • Cleveland
  • Jersey Village
  • Sealy
  • Hempstead
  • Willis
  • Bunker Hill Village
  • Greenspoint
  • Cypress
  • Aldine
  • Spring

The Harris County Office of Emergency Management and Houston Transtar received a number of reports of water on the roadways or flooded roads.

As of 7 a.m., the affected roadways included:

  • FM 2920 and Calvert Road near Tomball
  • Beltway 8 east northbound at Spencer Highway in Pasadena
  • I-45 North at Holzwarth Road in Spring
  • IH-69 Northbound At Williams Way Blvd in Fort Bend County
  • IH-610 EAST LOOP Northbound At Clinton Dr. in Houston

Officials are asking everyone to avoid those areas, and turn around if you see high water.

Meanwhile, residents along the coast were under a tornado watch until 11 a.m. This includes residents in:

  • Alvin
  • Angleton
  • Anahuac
  • Clute
  • Bay City
  • Dickinson
  • Freeport
  • Friendswood
  • Lake Jackson
  • League City
  • Pearland
  • Texas City
  • Wharton
  • Winnie

Although the were no reported tornadoes as of 7 a.m. in the Houston area , residents in west Harris County near Katy reported high winds toppling fences in the area.

While high water, flood and tornado warnings are issues for many in the Houston area, so were the power outages. As of 6 a.m. Thursday, more than 13,000 Harris County residents were without power due to the storms.

Residents in Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Galveston counties also reported some outages in the area.
