1. Top Chef star and James Beard Award winner, Chef Kwame Onwuachi, is coming to Houston this week to promote his new cookbook, My America: Recipes From a Young Black Chef. There will be a book signing at Skylawn on June 2 and a five-course dinner at Kulture on June 3, as part of Black Chef Table dinner series. (CultureMap Houston)

2. Members of the National Rifle Association board of directors re-elected CEO/executive vice president Wayne LaPierre and board president Charles Cotton at their annual convention in Houston, the organization announced. The organization has not met since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, as reported by the Associated Press. (Houston Patch)

3. A teenage victim was shot after planning to meet group for a narcotics transaction in Tomball on Monday afternoon, according to police. At about 1:32 p.m., a neighbor called deputies with the Harris County Sheriff's Office who responded to the shooting near 29828 Kingbird Drive. (ABC 13)

4. COVID-19 levels continue to rise in the Houston area with positivity now at 11%. Any level over 5% is considered uncontrolled spread by the CDC. Wastewater testing has reached 170% as of May 16 compared to July 2020. The wastewater data has been rising since March. (KHOU 11)

5. Former Houston Astro Carlos Correa has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Twins manager. Correa spent his first seven big-league seasons with the Astros, where he was Rookie of the Year and a two-time All-Star. (Click2Houston)

  • Janitors who clean Houston's office buildings are preparing to strike if they cannot reach an agreement with cleaning companies before their contract expires tonight at midnight. (Subscription: Houston Chronicle)
  • Hundreds of people gathered at the Houston National Ceremony on Monday for Memorial Day to honor the fallen men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The tradition had previously been canceled due to the pandemic. (KHOU 11)
