Ask The Gardener - "How do I know if a Texas native plant will grow in my Houston area garden?"

Q: How do I know if a Texas native plant will grow in my Houston area garden?
A: Texas and its biodiversity is amazing. Even the Houston metropolitan statistical area, which represents the surrounding 9 counties, is bigger than Rhode Island. The state is recognized to contain 10 ecoregion, or vegetational, areas. Houston is at the crossroads of the Piney Woods, Gulf Coast Prairies and Marshes, Post Oak Savannah and Blackland Prairies. This gives us a huge choice of native plants, and even with many choices, not everything will work. Annual rainfall may range from less than 10 inches in west Texas to over 50 inches here.
