DWI Interlock Device Fails To Stop Man From DWI Crash: Police Say

HUMBLE, TX — A man who police said ran a stop sign and hit a pedestrian was legally intoxicated at the time of the accident, despite having a DWI ignition interlock device on his car.

Deputy constables were called to the scene of the accident at the 20100 block of Kenswick Drive on Sunday.

Witnesses said the driver, identified as Loyd Nelson, ran a stop sign and hit a pedestrian in the designated crosswalk.

Deputies spoke with Nelson, 48, who seemed to be intoxication. Deputies gave Nelson a field sobriety test, which he failed.

During their investigation, police learned Nelson had several previous DWI convictions, and had a required DWI ignition interlock device installed in his vehicle at the time of the crash.

Deputies are not sure how Nelson was able to bypass the ignition interlock on his vehicle and drive if he was intoxicated.

Emergency Medical Services arrived and the pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Nelson was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, and was charged with intoxication assault with a motor vehicle. A judge set his bail at $30,000.
