Local Leaders Pay Respects During Peace Officers Memorial Day

HUMBLE, TX — City and County leaders commemorated law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty during a Peace Officers Memorial Day observance for National Police Week.

Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle and former U.S. Rep. Ted Poe sponsored a public ceremony on Monday at the Humble Civic Center honoring fallen Texas law-enforcement officers.

“At a time when the brave men and women of law enforcement find themselves increasingly under fire in both a literal and figurative sense, I am proud to honor them for continuing to pin on their badges and risk it all to protect our families and our communities,” said Cagle.

The 5th Annual Police Memorial paid tribute to fallen officers, deputies, troopers and K9s from 13 Texas law-enforcement agencies. The ceremony included remarks from Cagle, Poe, and such special guests as U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Pct. 4 Constable Mark Herman and Justices of the Peace Lincoln Goodwin and Laryssa Korduba.

Poe, a former congressman and state District Court judge, began the memorial event in 2015 for those unable to attend ceremonies at the national police memorial in Washington, D.C.

Cagle agreed to adopt the ceremony in 2019 after Poe announced his retirement.

“I am genuinely honored to continue Congressman and Judge Ted Poe’s tradition by hosting this moving ceremony,” said Cagle. “This event honors not only the fallen officers, but those who continue to risk their lives every day to protect us."
