Lone Star College-Kingwood Gets Grant to Help First Generation College Students

Lone Star College-Kingwood received a grant to mentor first generation college students.

KINGWOOD, TX — Lone Star College-Kingwood, and AmeriCorps Texas, are building a mentoring program for first generation college students. The program will be funded through a three-year, $353,000 grant from the OneStar Foundation Commission.

The Lone Star College Knowledge Corps program, located at LSC-Kingwood, will provide academic and process strategies to help the school attract students, about 55 percent of Texas high school graduates don't immediately enter college after graduation.

Lone Star College-Kingwood will also be given techniques to retain students, about one-third of Texas college students drop out after their first year.

The mentoring program at LSC will support students at two levels – high school students entering into higher education and college students working toward the next year.

Students who participate will learn skills on how to take notes in class, develop detailed study skills and how to better understand and follow a class syllabus.

The goal is to increase student engagement leading to increased student success and higher college completion rates.
