San Jacinto College and McCord Development broke ground on the planned 57-acre campus at Generation Park on Tuesday.

HOUSTON -- Officials with San Jacinto College and McCord Development broke ground on the planned 57-acre San Jacinto College campus on Tuesday at Generation Park.

The new campus, which is projected to open in 2020, will be the fifth campus, complementing San Jacinto's North, Central, South, and Maritime Campuses, currently serving approximately 45,000 credit and non-credit students annually.

"We're very excited to see this project begin to materialize," said San Jacinto College Chancellor Dr. Brenda Hellyer. "We've been in the evaluation and planning stages for several years and this new campus will be a wonderful asset for the local community and the many students who will attend here. San Jacinto College is proud to be part of this rapidly growing area and we are positioned to serve the needs of the northern part of our taxing district. We look forward to serving the surrounding area by being an academic transfer partner and a resource for workforce training.”

College officials announced the deal and closed on the property in May 2015.

The first phase of construction will feature a $26 million facility spanning 55,000 square feet, which will house general education and academic classes. Initially focusing on the educational needs of transfer students, the new campus will ultimately expand course offerings as further construction is completed.
