Here are the top five stories in Irving today:
- How windy, you ask? Well, the National Weather Service is warning that all of Sunday until midnight is subject to a wind advisory. The warning prompts residents to secure items like lawn furniture, trash cans and yard structures because persistent winds of 20 to 30 miles an hour are expected throughout the day. Driving may be impacted, in particular larger vehicles traveling in a west to east orientation. (accuweather)
- An Irving man has been sentenced to federal prison for his role in a cryptocurrency money laundering scheme. Deependra Bhusal, 46, pleaded guilty last year to the charges and, Thursday, a judge sentenced him to 46 months. Bhusal was one of three defendants in the case and he was personally responsible for laundering nearly $1.5 million. (CBS)
- The Boy Scouts of America, headquartered in Irving, tried to convince a federal judge in Wilmington, Delaware, to accept a $2.7 billion dollar compensation fund for victims of abuse in order to proceed with its plans for reorganization following a petition for bankruptcy in 2020. The organization is seeking to settle claims over 80,000 claims of abuse through the agreement rather than facing many individual trials. If the compensation plan is accepted, the organization would be protected from further liability. (Stamford Advocate)
- An escaped prisoner was last seen walking near a hotel in Euless. Jerriecca Louise Stevenson, 24, was being transported from Missouri to the Dallas County Jail when she escaped still in handcuffs at the DFW Airport April 1 and is still at large. When last seen, she was wearing a red hoodie, black tank top and gray sweatpants. (Fox 4)
- Irving has chosen to honor Assistant City Manager Ramiro Lopez by naming a street after him. Lopez served the city for 12 years focusing primarily on public works. The ceremony took place April 8 at Briery Yard, the city services center located at what used to be 128 N. Briery Road. (Irving Weekly)
