The pack, chartered through Midland WestSide Lions Club, was praised for projects with groups like Keep Midland Beautiful and local churches that build character, leadership, and citizenship among Midland youth.

Midland County approves hazard mitigation plan to access federal disaster funding (firstalert7.com) — Midland County has officially adopted a multi-year Hazard Mitigation Action Plan, unlocking access to FEMA grants for projects like emergency generators, roof upgrades, and other disaster‑resilience improvements. The plan, developed with public input, covers flooding, wildfires, extreme heat, and more, and includes the City of Midland, local school districts, Midland College, and Midland Memorial Hospital.

Midland ISD approves 2026-27 academic calendar with Aug. 18 start (mrt.com) — Midland ISD families now know the 2026-27 school year will start Aug. 18, after trustees unanimously approved a calendar shaped by community feedback. The schedule keeps full weeks for Thanksgiving, winter and spring breaks, ends classes by Memorial Day, and builds in professional learning days and bad-weather makeups for teachers and students.
   

4. UTPB receives $2.55 million Scharbauer Foundation Grant (yourbasin.com) — Midland educators and behavioral health workers could see new opportunities thanks to a $2.55 million Scharbauer Foundation grant to UT Permian Basin, aimed squarely at strengthening Midland’s education and mental health workforce. Up to 400 scholarships over two years will help Midland ISD employees earn teacher certification and support teacher apprenticeships, while behavioral health students gain clinical placements in Midland.
   

5. Breaking Bread Kitchen offers hope during the holidays (newswest9.com) — Breaking Bread Kitchen is stepping up for Midland residents facing homelessness and rising living costs, serving more than 200 meals a day plus showers and resource referrals. Clients describe the nonprofit as a daytime lifeline and surrogate family, especially during the holidays, when isolation and financial strain hit many Midlanders hardest.
