Here are the top stories today in Odessa-Midland:

  1. A two-vehicle crash 25 miles west of Odessa left a 42-year-old Alabama resident dead on the scene. Texas Department of Public Safety reported Tommy Jo Bohrbough crashed into a Mack truck and trailer on W. State Highway 302 just after 6 a.m. Friday morning. The mack truck was attempting to make a right turn on a dirt road when Bohrbough rear-ended the truck; he was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead on the scene. (Odessa American)
  2. Odessa Regional Medical Center CNO Carol A. Cates shared her thoughts on a recent CHOP study, which showed that the rate of fatal opioid poisoning in U.S. children under the age of five has doubled since 2005. Cates noted that this nationwide trend can be seen in Texas as well, with a "very sharp increase in opioid poisonings in every category." She emphasized that prevention — in the form of keeping medication out of reach of children and having critical conversations early — is key to decreasing these numbers. (Odessa American)
  3. As of Tuesday, a gallon of gas is at $3.05 in Texas — which is considered "calm" with bank failures and other recent nationwide financial challenges. Gas is down one percent this week and 23 percent this year, with similar percentages for diesel. Currently, Midland has the second-highest gas prices in Texas, with prices sitting at $3.12; Odessa is ranking 12th, with residents paying $3.05 per gallon. (CW33 Dallas)
