HPD Sergeant Charged With Wife's Murder: Police

PEARLAND, TX β€” A Houston Police sergeant is facing murder charges after his wife was found shot to death inside their home on Saturday. Sgt. Hilario Hernandez, 56, is in the Brazoria County Jail with his bail set at $800,000, officials said.

Belinda Hernandez, who was a librarian at Shadycrest Elementary School in Pearland ISD, had worked in the school district for 15 years, officials said.

Relatives found her body inside the couple's home at 1909 Canyon Creek Drive in Pearland at about noon on Saturday. Several hours later, police arrested her husband in Kingsville, Texas, located about 100 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.

Hernandez was taken to the Brazoria County Jail, where he remains in custody, officials said.

On Sunday, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo released a brief statement which read: "Our hearts go out to Belinda Hernandez, her children, friends and colleagues. Please keep them in your prayers."

Meanwhile, grief counselors will be at the Shadycrest Elementary School campus on Monday to help students and staff cope with this tragedy.
