Santa Fe High Plays Baseball Game For Their Hometown

A day after the tragic shooting at Santa Fe High School, the school baseball team took the field for their hometown.

SANTA FE, TX — While the community of Santa Fe continues to heal, some of the students injured on that tragic morning did something completely unexpected on Saturday. They played a baseball game.

It’s the baseball playoff season, and Santa Fe had a date to play on Friday night, but the shooting rampage that claimed 10 lives and injured 13 others changed things.

Or, so it appeared.

Makeshift memorials around the school to honor those lost continue to grow; survivors who heard the gunshots continue to heal.

But some students who ran in terror from their campus on Friday as a fellow student gunned down their classmates were resilient enough to play a baseball game on Saturday.

"They said they wanted to do it for the community," Coach Ronnie Wulf told KTRK.

One of those players who sustained a gunshot wound to the head sat in the dugout with his team a day later.

Another player sat nearby with his arm in a sling, both young men a testament to resiliency and healing.

They played Kingwood Park High School, losing 7-0 but the results didn’t matter.

The message was bigger, and other youth teams — teams that paid tribute with emblems on their batting helmets — knew it too.

The Kingwood Park players joined the Santa Fe players before the start of the game and linked arms in solidarity and in healing, and sent a message to those who will be healing for a long, long time that they are not alone.

The tragedy didn’t break the spirit of Santa Fe High School, or its players.

Instead, it has united the coastal town, and is helping many begin to heal, and maybe feel whole and safe again.
