Black History Month Celebrated At Round Rock Library

A collection of photos by Melissa Fontenette-Mitchell highlights myriad contributions African American families have made to the city.

ROUND ROCK, TX — In honor of Black History Month, the Round Rock Public Library will celebrate local families with a monthlong exhibit in the facility's gallery area, officials said.

A collection of photos by Melissa Fontenette-Mitchell, the exhibit highlights the contributions African American families have made toward the city's growth and success, officials said in an advisory. This year’s local theme, selected by the Round Rock Black History Organization, is "Black Family: Faith, Hope and Love, the Backbone of Strength and Survival."

One of the library's online resource vendors, ProQuest, has created a Black Freedom Struggle in the U.S. website, officials noted. Visitors can find historical newspaper articles, pamphlets, diaries, correspondence, and more from specific time periods in U.S. history marked by the opposition African Americans have faced on the road to freedom, library officials added.

Residents also can find local history resources through The Portal to Texas History, a gateway to rare, historical, and primary source materials from or about Texas, according to library officials. Created and maintained by the University of North Texas Libraries, the Portal leverages the power of hundreds of content partners across the state to provide "...a vibrant, growing collection of resources," according to the library's advisory.
