Here are the top three stories today in Round Rock:
- Round Rock's new Crisis Response Unit, part of the Community Risk Reduction Division led by Capt. Darwin Shell, works with local law enforcement, the fire department, and emergency
medical services to provide public safety services in the community. Since starting in April, they have helped 362 people. The unit responds to behavioral health crises including mental health emergencies, overdoses, and other substance use issues. (City of Round Rock) - As of Aug. 10, there has still been no response from Governor Abbott about the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) situation. State Rep. James Talarico, D-Round Rock, and other House Democrats have asked the Governor to call a special legislative session to address the emergency. Talarico said, "I think we can all agree this is cruel and unusual," citing reports of children using water bottles as makeshift toilets while stuck in their cells and routinely hurting themselves to get attention from staff. (KXAN)
- For the 2021-2022 school year, Round Rock ISD earned a Superior Rating on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) from the Texas Education Agency. For 18 of the past 19 years, RRISD's finance team has won a Superior (or A) rating, the state's highest possible rating. (Round Rock ISD News)
