Here are the top three stories today in Round Rock:

  1. A Round Rock church group came together to craft and gift a prayer quilt to the Uvalde community. The "Piecemakers" from St. Philip's United Methodist Church created a maroon-and-white quilt, which will be displayed at Herby Ham Activity Center. Each square has a prayer thread and hand-tied knots, which represent the prayers said for the victims of the tragic shooting. (Uvalde Leader-News)
  2. A Round Rock ISD student is hoping to claim the title of "America's Top Young Scientist." 13-year-old Asvini Thivakaran of Cedar Valley Middle School was named as one of the top 10 finalists for this year's 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The finalists will compete for the prestigious title — plus a grand prize of $25,000 — this October in Minneapolis. (KVUE.com)
  3. In an effort to meet staffing needs, the Round Rock Fire Department will expand its eligibility requirements. The city is now allowing candidates without prior experience or certification to apply; chosen candidates will enter a 13-week academy program to achieve the necessary training. Applications for the next academy program are currently open through Aug. 26. (Community Impact Newspaper)
