Preschoolers 'Root For Earth' In Celebration of Earth Day

Children took part in a variety of eco-friendly activities in celebration of The Goddard School’s seventh annual Root for Earth campaign. Root for Earth serves to plant seeds of change to inspire children and families to create a happier, healthier earth for generations to come.

Children engaged in a range of activities such as a harvesting vegetables, planting an herb garden, constructing art projects with things found in nature, learning about bees, and other eco-friendly projects inspired by STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). These projects foster creativity and imagination while giving children the opportunity to learn about recycling, going green and preserving the world around them.

A signature of Root for Earth, appropriately named “Lights Out!” took place Friday, April 21st – the day before Earth Day. Every Goddard School across the country shut off all non-essential lighting for an hour beginning at 10:00 a.m. local time. System-wide, the Lights Out initiative will save roughly 3.4 million watts of energy!

The Goddard School integrates lessons that promote ecological conservation, as this subject matter falls within The Goddard School’s focus on areas of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). At The Goddard School, environmental responsibility does not begin and end with Root for Earth. The play-based curriculum includes year-round, hands-on activities such as recycling and gardening that encourage children to take an active role in environment preservation.
