Round Rock Debuts Cutting-Edge LED Street Lights

The lights are currently at two locations in Round Rock.

Round Rock is testing out new high-efficiency LED lampheads on two of its streets.

Convergent technology leader GigaTera, along with Planled and lighting solutions leader Opterra have installed 100 of the LED lampheads on existing street light poles along sections of Double Creek Drive and Forest Creek Drive.

And it was all at no cost to the city.

City officials said they expect dramatic savings in energy and maintenance costs by replacing existing fixtures with these multi-purpose lights. The LED streetlights, in addition to providing more natural lighting at night, have the ability to flash red to alert motorists of an emergency.

Advanced LED lampheads have been installed on existing poles in the parking lot at the Round Rock Police Department. Some of the lampheads installed at the Police Department have high definition cameras built in.

None of the lampheads installed on Double Creek and Forest Creek have video cameras, city officials said.

Planled chose Round Rock for the pilot program because it has already adopted LED technology in some of its facilities, including the Round Rock Sports Center.
