Here are the top four stories today in Round Rock:
- Yesterday, Jul. 26, Round Rock's State Rep. James Talarico participated in Teach the Truth Coalition's "read-in" in the Capitol rotunda. The Teach the Truth Coalition is a coalition protesting book censorship in Texas public schools. According to a reporter, a current Rock ISD teacher spoke at the protest and said, "restrictions on reading material put teachers in a situation where they can't share history correctly through curriculum and books." (KVUE)
- At the Jul. 25 meeting, Round Rock ISD board of trustees appointed Kevin Johnson to the Place 1 seat. Johnson is replacing Jun Xiao, who resigned in June. Johnson said, "I will say that I'm excited and ecstatic about being here and also what it has meant to me and my family to live in this community." (Community Impact Newspaper)
- More than 200 residents of Texas saw a fireball on Jul. 24, and there are several videos of the cosmic phenomenon including one from Round Rock. Stella Kafka, an astronomer who serves as the executive director for the American Meteorological Society, said, "This is a very fantastic and rare phenomenon that some people never witness." Scientists at the American Meteor Society estimate that the fireball was the size of a small car before it entered the atmosphere due to its brightness. The fireball could have entered the atmosphere over Cistern, Texas, and ended its flight just outside of Austin; which means some meteorites, or remnants, may be found just west of Austin. (FOX 7 Austin)
- Dallas Keuchel, the 2015 AL Cy Young winner, will report to Triple-A Round Rock soon. The Rangers announced that Keuchel was signed to the minor league contract. This is the third team of the year to sign Keuchel. (Yard Barker)
