Here are the top three stories today in Round Rock:

  1. Yesterday, Aug. 15, the Round Rock Police Department closed parts of Sunrise Road in Round Rock after reports of rigged explosives at a home in the 2300 block of Vernell Way, where a "barricaded subject" was refusing to cooperate. The closure was from the intersection of Bradley Lane and David Curry Drive to the intersection of Bowman Road and Tiger Trail, near Jester Farms Park and Hernandez Middle School. RRPD reported that "a few dozen homes" near the 2300 block of Vernell Way were evacuated as a precaution. (KXAN)
  2. Invoices obtained by Axios Austin through an open records request show the Round Rock Independent School District spent almost $250,000 on bullet-resistant film for the windows of its elementary and middle schools. The glass installation was paid for with state money set aside in 2019 after the Santa Fe shootings. Schools are spending more and more on safety measures after recent school shootings. (Axios)
  3. Round Rock ISD overall earned a B on the state's report card for public schools, which carries a designation of Recognized Performance. 85 percent of RRISD campuses earned an A or B, with 27 achieving the highest possible rating. In all, 45 campuses earned an A or B, compared to 37 in 2019, which is the most recent year campuses were rated by the state. (Round Rock ISD News)
