Pilot Dead After Small Aircraft Crashes Near Round Rock

Emergency crews descended to an area near FM 1431 just north of Round Rock after an aircraft went down Wednesday afternoon.

ROUND ROCK, TX — One person was killed when a small aircraft went down near Round Rock Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

Multiple emergency agencies responded to the fiery scene of a downed small aircraft on Wednesday afternoon that resulted in the pilot's death.

Crews from the Round Rock Police Department, Williamson County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the aircraft crash off FM 1431 just north of Round Rock, officials said. Westbound lanes of FM 1431 west of Interstate 35 were temporarily closed to traffic as a result.

Sgt. Deon Cockrell, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, told Patch over the telephone the male pilot died at the scene. Cockrell added there was nobody else aboard the two-engine Cessna aircraft at the time of the crash.

In a subsequent email, the Texas Department of Public Safety said the aircraft caught fire after crashing in a wooded area off Ranch Road 1431 about a half-mile west of Interstate 35. The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified, officials said.

In a tweet posted just before 1:35 p.m., the Williamson County Sheriff's Office said the crash occurred in an unincorporated jurisdiction abutting the county.
