Williamson County Primary Runoff Election Guide: July 14, 2020

Voters will cast ballots on three Democratic runoff races for a congressional seat, railroad commission's slot and the U.S. Senate.

AUSTIN, TX — Williamson County voters will take to the polls on Tuesday, casting ballots on three Democratic runoff races for a congressional seat, railroad commission's slot and the U.S. Senate.

There are no Republican races for which county voters to cast ballots. The trio of runoff races to determine who will emerge as party standard-bearer for the November general election generated healthy interest during the ten-day early voting period that ended July 10. About 6.38 percent of the electorate turned out to cast ballots, elections officials recorded, with just over 20,000 votes recorded.

The runoff was pushed back from May 26 due to the coronavirus pandemic. For the same reason, Gov. Greg Abbott also allowed for ten days of early voting that began on June 29 instead of the traditional five.

Much of the interest during the early voting period was fueled by a spirited contest between Mary MJ Hegar and Royce West who seek to challenge longtime incumbent John Cornyn

Also up for grabs is the Democratic nod for the U.S. Rep. District 31 seat, pitting Christine Eady Mann and Donna Imam. A third race for railroad commissioner pits Roberto R. “Beto” Alonzo against Chrysta Castañeda.
