SAN ANTONIO (February 17, 2022) – Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda issued this statement following the Council’s approval of an ordinance approving six contracts to provide the City with services in connection with the SA: Ready to Work education and job placement program:

“There is no program like SA: Ready to Work in any city in the country, and while today’s contracts approval marks a watershed event in the program’s ongoing process, the most important work has been the planning that has brought us to this day, and the most impactful words have been those spoken and written as guidance for the effort at hand.

We’re going into uncharted territory and the path will be made with every step.

My concern is always for those who cannot speak for themselves and for those who have given much to our community, specifically our special needs community and our veterans.

Today’s updated report on special needs and veterans outreach is a good step in the correct direction. It is well known that our special needs population can perform positions in many occupations, so inclusion and outreach will be vital.

It is important that we keep the lessons learned from the Train for Jobs program in mind, especially those concerned with outreach, response, connectivity and wrap-around services.

I applaud everyone's efforts and ask that we continue to think of populations that historically have difficulties obtaining jobs and work to improve their outcomes.

The goal should be to help people affected by COVID to become productive citizens; we shouldn’t miss this opportunity.”
