SAN ANTONIO (February 10, 2022) — Today, City Council finalized the election for the 2022 – 2027 Municipal Bond Program. The $1.2 billion bond is the largest in San Antonio history and for the first time will include a housing category. Councilwoman Teri Castillo stated the following:
“As we have come to the end of the overall bond development process, the District 5 improvements propose $95.5 million in infrastructure and assets. This process represents the power of the collective. Thanks to the hard work of each Community Bond Committee, the District 5 appointees, and all the residents who made their voices heard throughout the process.
If approved at the May election, District 5 will see almost $27 million in total drainage investment, geared to improve flooding issues. District 5 proposed projects include the South Brazos Street and Probandt Phase 2 projects, almost $19 million in 12 parks, over $13.5million toward improving failed neighborhood streets and sidewalks, and $12.5 million in renovations for Fire Station #33.
The housing bond will address San Antonio’s housing. $150 million is proposed for investment in homeowner and rental rehabilitation prioritizing housing at risk of demolition, permanent supportive housing, and support public housing. The housing bond is aligned with the Strategic Housing Implementation Plan (SHIP).
Our office owes a major debt of gratitude for District 5 community members who showed up and engaged in public comment. I would like to thank everyone who served on our Community Bond Committee who were responsible for securing $35 million in funding. I now look forward to educating the public about the bond now that it is headed to the May 7th election.”
