Soldier Killed in Iraq in Non-Combat Incident

Department of Defense announced Sunday that 1st Lt. David Bauders, of Seattle, died Friday.

A soldier died in Iraq on Friday in what the Department of Defense has described as a non-combat related incident.

1st Lt. David A. Bauders, of Seattle, Wash., was at the Al Asad Air Base in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, according to a DOD release.

He was assigned to 176th Engineer Company, Snohomish, Wash. The company deployed on March 30, focused on maintaining and building facilities.

“As a guard unit, most of us have a lot of construction experience on the civilian side that we bring to the table,” Sgt. 1st Class Omar Trujillo told The Daily Herald before deployment. “So that's why we're very good at construction missions — better than most active Army units, I'd wager.”

Bauders was a member of Saint Alphonsus Parish.
