Search Called Off For US Marines Missing Off Australia Coast

A search and rescue operation for three Marines who were aboard an aircraft that crashed off the coast of Australia has been called off.

A search and rescue operation for three members of the United States Marine Corps who were involved in what military officials described as a "mishap" involving an MV-22 Osprey off the coast of Australia has been called off.

Marine officials said in a press release that 23 of the 26 personnel aboard the Osprey were rescued while an extensive search and rescue operation was underway for the three remaining service members. The aircraft was conducting regularly scheduled operations at the time of the mishap.

Ship's small boats and aircraft from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Strike Unit Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group conducted the search and rescue operations.

An investigation is underway. Marine officials say the next of kin of the tree missing Marines have been notified.

Marine Corps Commandant Robert B. Neller‏ took to Twitter to ask for thoughts and prayers for the families o the missing Marines.
