Car Hits Security Barrier Near White House

The Secret Service said the car did not breach the barrier.

WASHINGTON, DC — A car struck a security barrier near the White House at 17th and E street Friday afternoon, the Secret Service said. According to the Secret Service, the car did not breach the security barrier.

The driver of the car was taken into custody. The Secret Service said in a tweet that no shots were fired during the incident.

The car had Tennessee plates and was registered to an address in La Vergne.

Southbound 17th Street from H Street to Constitution Avenue NW is blocked.

The Washington Post reports that parts of the White House were on lockdown as a precaution.

President Donald Trump is hosting Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at the White House. Turnbull is remaining at the White House as the incident is being investigated.

The Secret Service says no law enforcement personnel were injured in the incident.
