President Trump's Approval Rating Near Record Lows
Independent voters' support for the president has fallen since April.

President Trump's approval rating has dropped to near-historic lows, and those who say he's doing a bad job includes a growing number of key supporters, according to a new national poll of American voters released Wednesday from Quinnipiac University. Overall, only 36 percent of voters say they approve of the president's job performance, while 58 percent disapprove.
This is a drop from the 40-56 approval rating the poll found on April 19. On April 4, the poll found his lowest approval rate at 35-57 percent. Trump's decision to launch missile strikes on Syria in response to chemical weapon attacks resulted a brief bump in his poll numbers in in April. Some of the sharpest drops in the newest poll come from key groups of support for the president. Among independent voters, for example, 29 percent approved of the president's performance while 63 percent disapproved, down from the April 19 rating of 38 and 56 percent. Support among white voters with no college degree and white men has also fallen, with voters in each group now evenly split on approval and disapproval.

"There is no way to spin or sugarcoat these sagging numbers," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll.
These results do not reflect any potential impact to Trump's approval rating that his high-profile firing of FBI Director James Comey might have had.

The poll surveyed 1,078 American voters contacted over the phone from May 4-9. It has a 3 percent margin of error.
