Report: Election Investigation Now Focused On Trump Campaign Coordination With Russia

CNN published the report just two days after James Comey's congressional testimony.

Information obtained by the FBI suggests that President Trump's associates coordinated with Russian agents during the election season, potentially part of a coordinated effort to damage Hillary Clinton's campaign, according to a report out Wednesday night from CNN.

The report, citing anonymous officials and far from definitive, says that the evidence consists of "human intelligence, travel, business and phone records and accounts of in-person meetings."

This news comes just two days after FBI Director James Comey testified to the House Intelligence Committee that the bureau is continuing to investigate the Trump campaign as a part of its probe into Russian intervention in the 2016 election.

The FBI began looking into possible coordination between Trump campaign associates and suspected Russian operatives because the bureau had gathered "a credible allegation of wrongdoing or reasonable basis to believe an American may be acting as an agent of a foreign power," Comey testified.

Comey said repeatedly that while some news reports of leaked information are accurate, many such reports were false, mistaken or misleading. CNN's report is careful to say that the FBI has not found conclusive proof of collusion.

Russian intelligence agencies in July began orchestrating the release of hacked emails stolen in a breach of the Democratic National Committee and others, including accounts belonging to Clinton campaign officials, according to U.S. intelligence agencies.

The FBI has reportedly already been investigating four former Trump campaign associates — Michael Flynn, Paul Manafort, Roger Stone and Carter Page — for contacts with Russians known to American spies. They have all denied any wrongdoing.
