Man Dies After Shooting Himself Near White House: Police

The Secret Service responded to reports of a man suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound near the north fence around noon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man died after apparently shooting himself near the north fence line of the White House early Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The Secret Service responded to reports of a person suffering a self-inflicted gunshot to the head near the complex around noon. The agency said no other injuries have been reported.

According to the Secret Service, the man approached the north fence line and took out a concealed handgun, firing several shots. The agency said the shots did not appear to be directed towards the White House.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said "we are aware of the situation, the president has been briefed."

President Donald Trump was in Florida when the incident unfolded. Trump flew back to D.C. Saturday evening.

Last week, a 35-year-old Tennessee woman was taken into custody after authorities say she intentionally drove her car into a security barrier near the White House.
