Trump Tells Voters Not To Back 'Liberal' Challenger To Roy Moore

Trump told reporters on Tuesday that Roy Moore's challenger is "soft on crime."

WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump on Tuesday urged voters not to support the Democratic challenger to Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. Moore, a Republican, has been accused of pursuing sexual relationships with teenagers when he was in his 30s and sexually assaulting two women.

Prior to his takeoff for his golf resort in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump told reporters: "We don't need a liberal person in there. We don't need somebody who's soft on crime like Jones," referring to Moore's Democratic challenger Doug Jones.

"I’ve looked at his record, it’s terrible on crime, it’s terrible on the border, it’s terrible on the military,” Trump added.

Six women have accused Moore of pursuing sexual relationships with them when he was in his 30s and they were teenagers. Two women have accused Moore of sexual abuse and harassment, including one who said he sexually assaulted her when she was 14 and he was 32.

Another woman claimed Moore tried to rip off her shirt and force her head into his crotch when she was 16 and he was in his 30s.

Trump noted on Tuesday that Moore has vehemently denied the allegations.

Trump has stayed mum on the controversy until Tuesday, but White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has repeatedly said that the decision should be left to Alabama voters to decide. Trump said he will announce next week if he will campaign on Moore's behalf.

Moore and Jones are facing off in a special election to fill the Senate seat that was vacated by Jeff Sessions when he became Trump's Attorney General.
