Vice President Pence used a private AOL email address to conduct state business while he was governor of Indiana, according to a report from IndyStar, a part of the USA Today network. Pence was highly critical of Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign for her use of a private email account when she was secretary of State.
IndyStar, which obtained some of the emails from the state government through a public record request, also reported that Pence's account was hacked.
The report flags two major concerns raised by Pence's emails: a lack of government transparency and a vulnerability to cyberattacks. While Pence likely did not deal with vital national security interests when he was governor as Clinton did in the State Department, he did send emails related to homeland security and public safety, IndyStar found. The reporters were also only able to obtain some of the former governor's emails, because others were deemed "too sensitive" for public release.
Though there are certainly differences between the circumstances around Clinton's emails and Pence's, the report puts the vice president in the awkward position of having to defend both his own past choices and his criticism of the former presidential candidate for similar activities.
