The 2018 World Series Champions Boston Red Sox are coming to the White House on Thursday, but not without bringing some controversy with them -- and leaving some members of the team behind.

President Trump is scheduled to welcome the Red Sox to the White House at 3:45 p.m.

Nearly a dozen players have already indicated that they are going to skip the visit, almost all of them players of color. Every white player on the team is expected to attend, according to a WCVB report, along with J.D. Martinez, who is Cuban.

Among those skipping include Alex Cora, the team's coach, and Mookie Betts, the reigning American League Most Valuable Player.

Skipping the ceremonial White House visit has become common for professional sports teams since Trump became president. The Golden State Warriors have done it multiple times, and the Philadelphia Eagles did so after their Super Bowl win. Others, like the New England Patriots and the Washington Capitals, saw most of the players attend.

Even the menu could be a source of some controversy. Trump has twice served collegiate champions with fast food in recent months.

Pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez reportedly said his decision to skip is "not a big deal" and said that he respects anyone's choice on the issue. "If you want to go or you don't want to go, that's your decision," he said.

Pitcher David Price didn't directly comment on the situation, but he did retweet the following comment from sports columnist Steve Buckley: "Basically, it's the white Sox who'll be going."

This is the first time a Red Sox championship team has had a significant number of players skip the White House visit. They visited twice under the Bush Administration after winning titles in 2004 and 2007, and once under the Obama Administration after their 2013 title.
