Watch: Melissa McCarthy's Sean Spicer Impression Returns To SNL
The White House press secretary had a mortifying week. Saturday Night LIve didn't let him to forget it.
MANHATTAN, NY — Reviving her widely praised impression of White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, Melissa McCarthy returned to Saturday Night Live this weekend for a special Easter-themed performance. After the public relations nightmare that was Spicer's last week, McCarthy pulled no punches in mocking the press secretary's universally panned gaffe in which he falsely claimed that Adolf Hitler didn't use chemical weapons. Scroll down to watch the scene.
Mercilessly, McCarthy emerged on set as Spicer in full Easter Bunny getup, a reference to his past of playing the holiday mascot at the White House Easter Egg Roll. "Don't push me, I'm sweating my Easter eggs off in this thing," McCarthy-as-Spicer-as-the-Easter-Bunny told the audience. Next came the apology: "Everybody shut up, so I can apologize. Yes, you all got your wish this week, didn't ya? Spicey finally made a mistake."

In the skit, Spicer goes on to apologize for comparing President Bashar al-Assad to Hitler and for calling concentration camps "Holocaust centers." But his apology doesn't exactly help, as he compounds his mistake by calling them "concentration clubs." Later on, he tries his hand at explaining the history of Passover using puppets. It doesn't go over well.
Like all good satire, it's an exaggerated form of reality; the real Spicer tried multiple times to clarify his initial mistaken claims, but only ended up putting his foot in his mouth repeatedly. (Even when the real Spicer finally offered a complete apology and retraction of his statements, he ended up saying that President Trump's policies were "destabilizing" the Middle East — another unfortunate word choice for someone whose job is being a communications professional.)

Many fans of the show — and particularly of McCarthy's Spicer impression — were overjoyed by her reappearance:

While SNL is only a comedy show, its skits may have real world impacts. President Trump has been known to watch and criticize the show, and reports suggested that McCarthy's first turn as Spicer left the president disconcerted. Now, as Chief Strategist Steve Bannon appears to be falling out of the president's favor, many outlets report that the press coverage of the former Breitbart News executive has had a powerful effect on Trump's view of him. SNL's portrayal of the press secretary may not bode well for his professional standing.
