Virginia Museum of History & Culture

Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln both had a vision that the United States should live up to its founding ideal of human equality, but they had different strategies for achieving that goal. In this lecture, Lincoln Prize–winning historian Jonathan W. White will discuss his latest book, Measuring the Man: The Writings of Frederick Douglass on Abraham Lincoln, to explore how Douglass went from being one of Lincoln’s fiercest critics to one of his greatest admirers. Using previously undiscovered letters and speeches that have not been seen for 160 years, White will describe how these two great leaders joined forces in the fight to end slavery and bring about racial equality.
Dr. Jonathan W. White is professor of American Studies at Christopher Newport University. He is the author or editor of twenty books and more than 100 articles, essays, and reviews about Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, slavery and emancipation, and the U.S. Constitution. His books include A House Built By Slaves: African American Visitors to the Lincoln White House; Emancipation, the Union Army, and the Reelection of Abraham Lincoln; Midnight in America: Darkness, Sleep, and Dreams during the Civil War; and Measuring the Man: The Writings of Frederick Douglass on Abraham Lincoln.

As part of the VMHC’s 250th initiative, join the VMHC for a special in-person version of our popular Movie Mythbusting series. Guests will enjoy a live screening of the action-adventure blockbuster National Treasure (2004), starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, and Sean Bean, with live commentary from VMHC staff on what’s true, what’s not, and unique connections to the VMHC collection.
Tickets include after-hours access to the VMHC's signature VA250th exhibition, Give Me Liberty: Virginia &amp; The Forging of a Nation.
Wraps, sandwiches, salads, snacks (including popcorn!), and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be available for purchase from the museum café. 
Please note: • National Treasure is rated PG. • Due to the movie’s running time, we will be fast forwarding through certain sections to facilitate discussion. We suggest watching the movie on your own before attending the program.

About the Artist:
With 30 years in the making – Dale accentuates his machine gun style delivery with a healthy dose of animated faces and then combines that with quick improvisations and well placed physical comedy. Basically he leaves the audience wishing they had his energy. His shows are always a night you won’t soon forget.
In addition to his training at Second City in Chicago Dale has had numerous television appearances including TBS – The Very Funny Show, NBC – Last Comic Standing Season Six, Fox – 30 Seconds to Fame and most recently on The Circle network’s Stand Up Live Nashville seasons 1 and 2. If you don’t blink you might see him in the 2003 MGM movie “Out Of Time” with Denzel Washington.
His new album “I’m Not Well” debuted in the top three on iTunes and Amazon and stayed there for over a week. Dale is a regular on Sirius XM’s “The Jeff and Larry Channel” and has performed at countless clubs, colleges, corporate functions, cruise ships and comedy festivals. He has won the Comedy 10K, Laughlin Comedy Festival, San Diego Comedy Festival and The Antelope Valley Comedy Festival.
In 2017 he was invited to perform on two episodes of “The Comedy All Stars” for Pureflix which led to acting roles on the tv series “Malibu Dan the Family Man” and in 2021 “Banking on Christmas”.

About the Author: Max Watman, who was raised in the Shenandoah Valley, completed his undergraduate studies at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and went on to earn an MFA in creative writing from Columbia University. Watman authored several books, including Race Day (Ivan R. Dee, 2005), Chasing the White Dog: An Amateur Outlaw’s Adventures in Moonshine (Simon and Schuster, 2010), and Harvest: Field Notes from a Far Flung Pursuit of Real Food (W.W. Norton, 2014) to great acclaim. Besides being a well-regarded writer of the South and a teacher at Virginia Commonwealth University, Watman has also worked as a farmer, a silversmith, a tutor, a greenskeeper, a warehouseman, a cook, and a musician. Tomorrow, the War is his first novel.
Ed Trask is a musician, painter, and muralist whose work has been collected into many permanent collections. Trask earned a BFA in Painting &amp; Printmaking from VCU and while in school, he transformed many of the dilapidated buildings around Richmond City into his very own art gallery through painted murals. After graduating in 1992, he continued painting illegal murals around the world while on tour with different punk rock bands and friends. Trask has since become involved with bringing creative changes to Richmond and other cities through public art. He co-founded the RVA Street Art Festival and served as a commissioner for Richmond’s Public Art Commission. He is a past board member of the Visual Arts Center of Richmond and has lectured and facilitated creative consulting programs for numerous corporations while working with community nonprofits to bring creative, inclusive public art throughout the city. Ed Trasks’ paintings and murals appear in many permanent collections, including the Modern &amp; Contemporary Art Collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Ed lives in Richmond VA with his wife and two children.

With her unique blend of humor, wit, and fearless social commentary, Zarna Garg has emerged as a comedic trailblazer. An Indian immigrant mom based in New York City, Zarna showcases her sharp and relatable humor in her first comedy special, One in a Billion, available on Amazon Prime. Her second special, Practical People Win, is currently streaming on Hulu as part of Hulu’s Hilarious Comedy Series, marking another major milestone in her skyrocketing career. Zarna’s book, This American Woman, reached the New York Times Best Seller list. Drawing audiences into a world where laughter and thought-provoking conversation coexist, Zarna has garnered critical acclaim. Jason Zinoman of The New York Times wrote, “Garg has the kind of presence that powers network sitcoms.” She hosts the popular podcast The Zarna Garg Family Show alongside her entire family, diving into modern life’s big issues — from family dynamics to contemporary social challenges. About the Book: July 1950: Mick Mulligan has just hung out his shingle as a private investigator in New York’s sweaty Hell’s Kitchen. A former Hollywood cartoonist who was blacklisted during a communist witch hunt, Mick is broke, divorced, and in need of a paying gig to make his child support payments. But maybe not this gig. First off, it’s impossible. Worse, it’s liable to get him killed.
Last year, universally reviled cab company owner Irwin Johnson was murdered. One of his drivers, an African American Communist Party member named Harold Williams, was arrested, tried, and found guilty, despite scant evidence. Now his execution date is two weeks away. New York City labor leader Duke Rogowski asks Mick to find fresh evidence that might buy Harold a stay of execution.
Lots of people might have wanted Irwin Johnson dead—anyone from his betrayed wife to his jilted mistresses’ jealous husbands to the mafiosi he was stealing business from. But no one has any reason to help Mick exonerate Harold Williams, and some of Irwin’s former associates are happy to take a blunt object to the head of anyone asking awkward questions. Yet Mick can’t abandon a potentially innocent man to the electric chair. Can he pull off a miracle?
About the Author: Con Lehane’s books include the 42nd Street Library mysteries, featuring Raymond Ambler, curator of the library’s (fictional) crime fiction collection, as well as three noirish mysteries in which bartender Brian McNulty muddles his way through the crime-infested streets of New York in the 1980s. Con has published stories in Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazines. Over the years, he’s been a community college professor, union organizer, labor journalist, and has tended bar at two dozen or so drinking establishments. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University School of the Arts and has taught fiction writing and mystery writing at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
John Copenhaver is an award-winning author whose latest novel, Hall of Mirrors, was named a New York Times Crime Novel of the Year and won the Left Coast Crime Award for Best Historical Mystery. His earlier books include Dodging and Burning and The Savage Kind, which won the Lambda Literary Award for Best LGBTQ Mystery. He co-edited Crime Ink: Iconic and serves on the board of International Thriller Writers. A founding member of Queer Crime Writers, he teaches at VCU and mentors in the University of Nebraska Omaha’s MFA program. He lives in Richmond, Virginia.

Also his sustainability in Hollywood and his experience with Race in the US. With Disney+ recently announcing the 2nd season of The Proud Family.
