“Roots So Deep” is a four-part documentary series about inventive farmers and maverick scientists building a path to solving climate change with hooves, heart and soil. Parts one and four will be screened at this event.
Following the film, a panel of experts from Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve, Princeton Hydro and Native Plants Healthy Planet Podcast will discuss the film and take questions.
In the documentary, the question is asked, “Can an underutilized way to graze cattle, that mimics the way bison once roamed the land, help get farmers out of debt, restore our depleted soils, rebuild wildlife habitat and draw down huge amounts of carbon?”
“Roots So Deep” is guided by director and wrangler of scientists Peter Byck as he meets farmers on both sides of the fence – the folks practicing an adaptive way to graze, and their neighbors set in their family’s generations-old method of doing things. Byck’s team of outcast scientists are measuring what’s happening on both sides of the fences – exploring if this adaptive grazing could help slow down climate change.

Award-winning Elvis tribute artist Matthew Boyce and the Essential Elvis Tribute Band will return to Newtown!
Backed by a live band, Boyce’s “Tribute to the King” show is one of the most historically accurate representations of Elvis on tour. You’ll feel like you journeyed back in time as you hear the King’s biggest hits and some more obscure songs he recorded while on tour.
Matthew Boyce has performed professionally since the age of eight. He has competed at Elvis festivals throughout the U.S. and Canada, is a 10-time grand champion, and is currently performing full-time in Branson, MO. Joining Boyce in Newtown will be his brother Spencer, who will open the show as a young Elvis.

Piano man Wade Preston &amp; Friends will bring A Night of Billy Joel to the historic Newtown Theatre.
Preston is known for playing the Piano Man role in the Broadway hit Movin’ Out during its nearly four-year run. Billy Joel was so impressed by Wade’s performances that he asked him to do nearly all of the rehearsals and sound checks for Joel’s historic Last Play at Shea concerts (Preston’s job title was “Stunt Billy”).
Prior to Movin’ Out, Preston was well known on the West Coast as the preeminent boogie pianist, revered for his rollicking performances, stunning technical abilities, spirited and versatile singing, and sense of humor.

The Movie Club pick for February is Singin’ in the Rain (1952).&nbsp;A silent film star falls for a chorus girl just as he and his delusionally jealous screen partner are trying to make the difficult transition to talking pictures in 1920s Hollywood.
Each Movie Club film is introduced by Emmy Award winner and film historian Joe Amodei, President/CEO of Virgil Films &amp; Entertainment. After the movie, Joe will be joined by a special guest for a conversation with the audience about the film.
Movie Club is “donate what you wish” for Newtown Theatre members. Tickets can still be reserved for free online so we know how many to expect. You can include a donation that feels right to you when reserving your tickets online. On February 4, 1864, Frederick Douglass visited Newtown and spoke at Newtown Hall, now known as Newtown Theatre. On February 4, 2025 – exactly 162 years later – the theatre will welcome nationally acclaimed Frederick Douglass impersonator Darius Wallace to the theatre to deliver “Frederick Douglass: The Self-Made Man &amp; The Work of Rebuilding a Nation.”
This is a completely different show than 2025.&nbsp;
In this one-man theatrical event, Wallace steps into the voice, passion and moral authority of Frederick Dougalss to deliver his power Self-Made Man speech – an enduring message about resilience, education and self-determination. But this is more than a recitation. The evening expands to include what Douglass spoke about in Newtown in 1864, which was his urgent advocacy for the Freedmen’s Bureau – an institution that provided education, housing, and legal aid to millions of newly freed men and women – and his vision for a nation united by justice and equality.
This performance speaks powerfully to today’s conversations about equity, citizenship, and the responsibility we share in shaping a more just society. It is a stirring reminder that the work of freedom is never finished and that we all have a role in building the future.<h3>Cocktail Hour</h3>
Prior to the event, a limited number of tickets are available for a 6-7 PM cocktail hour at the historic Court Inn, 105 Court Street. Wallace will attend the cocktail party as Frederick Douglass.
Combined tickets for the cocktail hour/performance include VIP seating at the Newtown Theatre. All proceeds from the cocktail hour benefit the Newtown Historic Association.
<h3>African American Museum of Bucks County</h3>
A percentage of ticket sales from the Frederick Douglass presentation will support the <a href="https://www.aamuseumbucks.org/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">African American Museum of Bucks County</a>. For 10 years, the AAMBC has honored the rich legacy of the African American experience in mobile exhibits that inspire pride in our heritage, share untold stories about the diverse journey of our people, and highlight African American contributions in art, music, literature, politics, sports, and culture.

This fun, quirky event will feature a full spaghetti dinner at La Stalla followed by a classic “spaghetti western” movie at the theatre.
The night starts at La Stalla at 5:30 p.m. where guests will enjoy a family-style dinner of spaghetti, meatballs, Ceasar salad, bread and dessert. After dinner, guests will move to the theatre for a screening of 1966’s “Django” which will start at 7:30 p.m.
A “spaghetti western” is the nickname for a subgenre of films made by Italian directors in the 1960s and 70s. These often low-budget movies were shot primarily in Almeria and the Tabernas Desert in Spain. The main characters in spaghetti westerns are often anti-heroes with questionable morals and motives. They are frequently rugged, unshaven, and sunburnt, in contrast to the clean-looking heroes of traditional westerns. 
Directed by Sergio Corbucci, “Django” follows a mysterious, gun-slinging drifter named Django (Franco Nero) who drags a coffin behind him as he wanders into a desolate border town torn apart by a gang of racist ex-Confederates and a group of Mexican bandits. Torn between greed and justice, he becomes embroiled in the violent struggle between the two factions.
