The Bartow History Museum will host its January Lunch &amp; Learn program, Cookbook Authors Who Have Rose to Fame Through Modern Media, on January 14, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., welcoming Cartersville native Dr. Valerie Holt for a presentation exploring how modern media has propelled cookbook authors to national fame. The program examines how television, blogs, and social media transformed home cooks into household names, tracing the rise of figures such as Joanna Gaines, Ree Drummond (The Pioneer Woman), Barbara Costello (Brunch with Babs), and Georgia native Trisha Yearwood, and highlighting how each used modern platforms to build massive audiences. Attendees will also get a peek at some of their popular recipes, with samples available, and are encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy the presentation. Dr. Holt brings 30 years of public-school teaching experience, including 17 years in Home Economics, national cooking competition experience, authorship of two cookbooks, and her current role as a professor in the School of Education at Berry College.Admission is free for museum members and $9 for non-members.

Lunch & Learn: Cookbook Authors Who Have Rose to Fame Through Modern Media

The Bartow History Museum will host Girl Scout Day - Georgia’s Native Peoples Badge on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., offering Junior Girl Scouts (grades 4 - 5) the opportunity to earn the Georgia’s Native Peoples Council’s Own Badge from the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. During this engaging program, participants will explore the history and culture of the Cherokee and Muscogee peoples through storytelling, hands-on crafts, and interactive activities, learning about the tribes’ original homelands in Georgia and their lives before and during Removal. All attending scouts will complete the full badge requirements and receive their badge at the conclusion of the program.The cost is $20 per scout and $9 per parent or chaperone, registration is required, and space is limited, so advance registration is strongly encouraged.

Girl Scout Day: Georgia’s Native People’s Badge (Junior)

The Bartow History Museum will host an evening lecture, The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Making of America's Parks, on January 29, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., welcoming authors Ren and Helen Davis for a program exploring the history and lasting impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps, one of the most influential New Deal programs in American history. Drawing from their 2011 book Our Mark on This Land: A Guide to the Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps in America’s Parks, the Davises will share insights from more than a decade of research conducted in state and national archives, park collections, and through on-site visits to parks across the country, a project that grew out of a 1998 Georgia Journal Magazine article on the CCC’s work in Georgia. The program will examine how the CCC shaped America’s parks and public lands and why its legacy continues to matter today. Although the book is no longer in print, limited copies will be available for purchase.Admission is free for museum members and $9 for non-members.

Evening Lecture: The Civilian Conservation Corps and the Making of America’s Parks

The Bartow History Museum will present its February Lunch &amp; Learn program, On the Circuit: Networks of Black Entertainment in Georgia, on February 18, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. This special roundtable explores the history and lasting legacy of the Chitlin Circuit and its vital role in providing safe performance spaces for Black entertainers during segregation. The program connects to a 2024 initiative in which the Georgia Department of Community Affairs received a grant from the Fox Theatre in Atlanta to develop a historic context for the proposed Georgia Chitlin Circuit Heritage Trail, documenting a statewide network of tent shows, theaters, and juke joints that operated from the 1920s through the mid-1960s. The panel features experts involved in the project, including Mary Wilson Joseph, Community Outreach Coordinator with DCA, who will introduce the initiative and its goals; Leigh Burns, Director of Community Partnerships at the Fox Theatre, who will discuss the grant program and the importance of supporting this research; and historians Renee’ Donnell and Wes Nimmo of New South Associates, who will share findings from the recently completed study, including research methods and notable Chitlin Circuit venues across Georgia. Joseph will conclude the program by moderating a panel discussion and audience Q&amp;A. Admission is free for museum members and $9 for non-members.

Lunch & Learn: On the Circuit: Networks of Black Entertainment in Georgia

The Bartow History Museum will host historian Brad Quinlin on February 26, 2026, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. for First Footsteps of Freedom, a compelling program examining the lives of formerly enslaved men who became U.S. soldiers during the Civil War. In 1864, these newly freed men served as stretcher bearers during the Atlanta Campaign, moving under fire across the battlefields of Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Vinings Station, and Atlanta, where they risked their lives to save wounded Union soldiers in a critical yet often overlooked role. Quinlin will share the stories of William Tucker, Matthew Moore, George Wilson, Cleve Berq, and others, tracing their journeys from slavery to freedom to military service, drawing on personal accounts and extensive historical documentation to highlight their courage, resilience, and humanity during and after the war. Grounded in more than 30 years of research and over 500,000 documents from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., Quinlin’s work brings depth and clarity to this important chapter of Civil War history.Admission is free for museum members and $9 for non-members.

The Bartow History Museum invites the public to its March Lunch &amp; Learn program, Piecing Together the Past, on March 18, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Historian and researcher Allan Payton will present a powerful and deeply personal account drawn from years of research, tracing his journey to uncover the life of his great-great-grandfather, a Confederate soldier whose story was only partially preserved through family memory - known mainly for losing a leg during the war and later struggling to farm with a crude wooden prosthetic. The presentation explores the hardships faced by Civil War soldiers and highlights the critical role of archival research, family artifacts, and persistence in recovering lost history. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch and stay for discussion following the program.
