Featuring Abbie Barrett, Chris Cote (Upper Crust), Good Trouble Brass Band, Linnea Herzog (Linnea's Garden), Linda Twiss-Gioscia, Paul Willis Which Side?: A Protest Music Teach-Out is a concert and discussion series celebrating and exploring protest music. The events will use James Sullivan’s book, <a href="https://bookshop.org/p/books/which-side-are-you-on-20th-century-american-history-in-100-protest-songs-journalist-james-sullivan/3c07d1ecd5552c14?ean=9780190660307&amp;next=t&amp;next=t" target="_blank" aria-label="Opens in a new tab." rel="nofollow">Which Side Are You On?</a>: 20th Century American History in 100 Protest Songs, as a starting point for the presentation of songs that ask listeners to consider how music gives voice to resistance, advocacy, and change. While the series will anchor itself to the book, collaborators will also contribute 21st-century music, both originals and covers. The show is scheduled to begin promptly at 8pm Admission is pay-what-you-want, with all proceeds going to the musicians and other direct expenses. Tickets can be reserved, but a reservation does not guarantee entry unless you are in the room by 7:30pm If there are people waiting for entry, reservations will be released starting at that time. If there are any profits after workers are paid, they will be donated to an appropriate non-profit fighting for intellectual freedom in our nation’s courts. This series is produced by Joyce Linehan, Jon Lupfer, and James Sullivan, with the help of many generous friends. Featuring Abbie Barrett, Chris Cote (Upper Crust), Good Trouble Brass Band, Linnea Herzog (Linnea's Garden), Linda Twiss-Gioscia (Roxy and the Crisis), and Paul Willis, each backed by the house band The Paid Protesters — Ed Valauskas (music director). The 90-minute show will also feature commentary by Sullivan, and a short discussion at the end.

From Europe to Australia and all 48 lower states, they bring an unforgettable show to the stage Deke Dickerson - Journeyman musician/singer/entertainer Deke Dickerson is keeping America’s roots music alive by interjecting new creativity into genres that flourished in decades previous. Such efforts have rewarded him with the Ameripolitan Music Award for Musician of the Year, among other accolades. Dickerson’s newest band venture is Deke Dickerson and the Whippersnappers. The Whippersnappers are an energetic backing band of younger musicians from Los Angeles: Bert Avalos on guitar, Zander Griffith on bass, and Dylan Patterson on drums. The Honey Steelers are a Lowell-based Americana band playing original tunes and reimagined covers from artists like Ray Charles, John Prine, Ian Tyson, Gene Autry, Pink Martini, Bob Dylan, The Band and The Beatles. They’ll have you stomping your feet one moment and humming a lullaby the next—often while laughing at their on-stage banter. Smart, soulful, and just a bit goofy. Band members include: BOB SEVIGNY - GUITAR, BASS, &amp; VOCALS Bob's been pickin' the guitar and singing in local Northeast bands for more than two decades now. Mostly in the Americana/bluegrass/oldtime styles. He once spent five years driving a tractor trailer around and is fond of the outdoors and fine cheeses. MICKEY ROACHE - PEDAL STEEL, MANDOLIN, GUITAR &amp;VOCALS Never met a guitar he didn’t like. Currently also playing in the Steely Dan coverband, The Nightflies. RISA LAVELLE - KEYBOARDS, OCTAVE MANDOLIN, &amp; VOCALS As a young girl, Risa dreamed of being Carole King’s doppelgänger. With her hands on the keys and her wild curls dancing to the beat, the the stage feels like home. She spent years performing musical theatre in New York City and the Boston Area. She studied music theory and composition at New England Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, and Brown University. Risa also performs as a singer/songwriter and is currently working on her first solo album. HARVEY BAGG - BASS, GUITAR &amp; VOCALS While eschewing both the philosophic epicurean ideal, and the rigors of stoicism, Harvey spends much of his time exploring the neo-Platonic dichotomy. He also plays the bass, guitar, and ukulele. Currently Harvey also plays with The Bagg Boys and in the Bluegrass community in the Boston area. TOM MURRAY - DRUMS Originally from Worcester, MA, Tom got his start with the band Landslide and later moved to Los Angeles, where he played drums, sang, and wrote songs in a great band called "Aileen Quinn and The Leapin' Lizards". Aileen is the twice Golden Globe nominated and multi- platinum selling singer and actor who played "Annie" in the original 1982 movie. He also played drums for 13 years with Grammy nominated hit makers "We Five", who had a million selling hit single "You Were On My Mind". He has recorded drums and vocals on album releases by "Aileen Quinn and The Leapin' Lizards", the band "STAND", "Rattle Ok", "Slavin' Dave and Loose Gravel”, Christopher Burgan, Elizabeth Carlisle and Greg Smith Band. “THE HOTTEST BAND IN THE CELTIC REALM” – The Boston Globe “A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN” and “THE BEST TRADITIONAL IRISH BAND” – Dolly Parton on her collaboration with Altan on two of her albums Heartsongs (1994) and Little Sparrow (2001) The spirit and sound of Altan comes from the deep and rich musical tradition of their native Co. Donegal. On one of his many visits to the Donegal Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, Belfast born flute player Frankie Kennedy met fiddler and singer Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, sparking off a deep musical connection, marriage in 1981, and a journey that took them all over the world. Their vision was to bring the unique repertoire of Donegal music to the world and that mission is still as strong as ever. <a href="https://altan.ie/" target="_blank" aria-label="Opens in a new tab." rel="nofollow">https://altan.ie/ </a>The Burren was opened in January 1996 by owners Tommy McCarthy and Louise Costello, who are both musicians (Tommy a fiddler and Louise a banjoist and accordionist). They met in Boston in 1986, playing on the Irish trad scene and later married. Located in the heart of Davis Square, just steps from the red line and Somerville Theatre, The Burren has become the hottest live music venue, with nightly shows featuring local, national and international acts. Shows include all genres from Irish Traditional, Folk, Americana, Bluegrass, old-timey, and Gypsy jazz, to Rock, Pop, Indie and everything in between. Well-known Irish performers who have appeared at The Burren include members of De Dannan, John Carty, Lunasa and Sharon Shannon. Tommy &amp; Louise have built a reputation for serving up a truly authentic Irish experience at each of their three bars. In addition to The Burren, they also own The Bebop, on Boylston St, in Boston, and the recently opened McCarthy’s Pub (and Toad), in Porter Square, Cambridge. Brian O’Donovan – The Burren Backroom Series Back in 2011, Tommy approached Brian O’Donovan, the host of WGBH’s Irish music show Celtic Sojourn about hosting a weekly series at The Burren. Brian agreed and The Burren Backroom Series was born. Brian continued hosting the series for 12 years, featuring world class traditional and contemporary music from around the Celtic world. Sadly, Brian died in October 2023, but his legacy continues with the “Brian O’Donovan Legacy Series”, helmed by Tommy, Brian’s wife Lindsay, and The Burren’s music-booking agent, Tom Bianchi.

He is widely known for his rich baritone voice and his impressive collection of musical instruments, which includes concertinas, recorders, penny-whistles, bombards, gemshorns, cornamuse, shawm, rauschphieffe - or, as he explains, "generally anything that requires a lot of hot air". At the heart of David's work is his extensive collection of songs from the Maritime tradition. To date, David has recorded four solo CDs; his latest, Last Trip Home, was released in the Fall of 2009 and features his daughter, Linnea, who is also a Revels performer. David has performed with Revels since 1980 as a singer, instrumentalist and, since 1991, as Master of Ceremonies. Since 2014, David has served as Artist in Residence at Revels and has presented his acclaimed School Enrichment Programs to schools across the region as an extension of Revels Education. He runs tours of Boston Harbor during the summer months, leading over 5,000 inner-city children on boat trips to George's and Spectacle Islands. Local singer/songwriter Ethan Rossiter returns to the Burren Back Room with his band to celebrate the release of his latest EP "Help Is On The Way." His tunes stretch different styles. From rock to folk to reggae, his toe-tapping songs take on themes of love and aging. Rossiter had been recording and performing his songs for many years (including a run for a few years creating kids/family music with his band The Jamberries). He very much looks forward to his return to Somerville and a fun night filled with original, upbeat music.
