My family was a news family - we got the daily paper and discussed the nightly news over dinner. On the weekend, CBS News Sunday morning was part of our breakfast routine and we spent the first part of the day reading and swapping sections of the newspaper. With all that information floating around in our heads, you'd think one of us would have been able to beat my Dad at Trivial Pursuit. But, we never did - even when we teamed up against him! My first internship was in high school with the Rochester Eccentric newspaper. But I really caught the news bug at Michigan State University, where I studied history and journalism. I found a way to combine both subjects with jobs at The State News and the Lansing State Journal. Journalism, after all, has been called "the first rough draft of history." As luck would have it, I landed my first professional job near home at The Oakland Press and from there moved to The Detroit News. Despite its ups and downs, journalism has been a rewarding career that has allowed me to learn something new every day, meet fascinating people, be creative and serve the community!

The event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 4 will feature locally handmade fine arts and crafts, pottery, jewelry, metal, photography, woodworking, glass, textiles and more.
The event will feature giveaways, prizes, refreshments and visits from Ernest R. Dickerson, who has directed several episodes of "The Walking Dead," and "Mouse Guard" creator David Petersen of Ferndale.
The May 7 event is hosted by the Holocaust Memorial Center to celebrate the Farmington Hills museum's acquisition of a sapling from the white chestnut tree that brought the young Holocaust victim solace during World War II.
Composer Volker Blumenthaler and lyricist Alexander Gruber will visit from Germany to speak about their inspiration and hear "My Name is Anne Frank" performed in its entirety for the first time May 7 at Berkley High School.
The informal club will meet at 6 p.m. Mondays starting May 13 in Schiffer Park for a 3- to 5-mile easy run. Runners of all paces are invited to participate.
A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Wednesday evening; major work on West Nine Mile Road is not scheduled to begin until May 13.

"People can get to know each other and we can get some organic veggies," says Wendy Appleton, who serves as liaison to the Royal Oak-Huntington Woods TimeBank.
The public is invited to attend a "How the West was One" groundbreaking ceremony and community roundup from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 1.
"I'm very optimistic about our future, and there's a lot of things I want to continue working on," he says Tuesday.
The work will take place Thursday, May 2, following the conclusion of a lease that had generated approximately $31,000 in revenue annually for the city.
No one was injured in the incident that blocked traffic for several hours Tuesday, the Ferndale Police Department says.

"It's just good to know that all the hard work you put in finally pays off," says the senior, who signed Monday as a pitcher with the Division 2 school.
"We had considered opening this spring for plant season, but the weather has been so unpredictable ... that we're going to hold off on that plan," owner Laura Uhlianuk says.
The 3-year-old tabby left his home on the corner of Bermuda and East Lewiston in Ferndale through an open window Saturday night.
The group will perform “8 Mile Rhythm” by Metro Detroit native Ira Hearshen at 7 p.m. May 18 in the FHS auditorium.
