Museum for Art in Wood

This First Friday, stop into the Museum for Art in Wood and experience its current exhibitions. On view in the main gallery, A Usable Past: Reflections on a Nation and Its Inheritance, brings together sculpture by twelve artists who reckon with America’s layered histories. A powerful exhibition, drawing on the metaphorical power inherent in the material of wood, these artists translate inheritance into form, giving “shape and substance to national identity.” In addition, on view in the Museums Research Library is the collection-themed exhibition American Graffiti: Painting, Dyeing, and Surface Design in Wood, which follows the rebellious, experimental, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain.
While visitors are at the Museum, explore its permanent collection featuring over 1,400 objects and shop the <a href="https://museum-for-art-in-wood.myshopify.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Museum Store</a> for unique handmade objects, jewelry, artworks, and books.

Young Yeila dreams of being a superstar, but her lack of confidence gives her awful stage fright. With advice from her mother and mentors, Yeila begins her journey to find her roots, get confidence, and be amazing! Travel with Yeila, who visits her grandmother in Cuba to add a salsa flavor to her own hip-hop style! The audience gets to dance along in this dynamic participation play where one actress creates three generations of lively women. Journey with Yeila as she discovers the fun of her multi-cultural heritage.
A Relaxed Performance will be presented on Saturday, January 18, at 3 p.m., which is a sensory-friendly performance designed for those with autism, sensory sensitivities, or other needs. House lights remain dimmed, sound levels are adjusted, and audience members are free to move or take breaks as needed.

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens presents “Face to Face: Isaiah Zagar’s Mosaicked Portraits,” an exhibition highlighting the inspirations behind Isaiah Zagar’s artwork. The intimate works include people who have influenced his life, work, and world, as well as strangers and individuals who captured his imagination. Embodying the broader spirit of Folk Art, collaboration, and community, the portraits are composed from fragments of tile, mirror, folk artwork, and other materials, creating a meeting place between artist and subject. Through this collection, visitors can experience Zagar’s mosaics up close, connecting with the people and stories that shaped his art. This exhibition is on display through April 12th.

Join Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) for Everything But the Kitchen Sink Mosaic Workshop, a two-hour workshop led by the PMG education team exploring techniques used by PMG creator Isaiah Zagar. Known for his unique and, some say, liberating method for creating mosaics, participants will examine Zagar murals, prepare and create materials to make their own mosaic.
Guests will learn how to cut glass, break tile, mix grout, and lay out a small 9″ x 9″ mosaic to take home. The program empowers participants with mosaic-making skills and inspiration for future endeavors. The workshop is available for participants ages 12+, but all participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens presents a three-week panel mosaic workshop, where participants will be led by PMG’s Preservation Team in creating their own 24” x 16” mosaic panel using the Zagar Method of mosaicking. Discover this freeing and versatile art form with staff who have trained with PMG creator Isaiah Zagar and are responsible for maintaining the mosaics at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Participants should plan to take their mosaic home with them on the last day of class on February 12. Framing is available for a discounted rate at New Image Art &amp; Framing, 601 S. 9th Street. Participants must be at least 18 years old to participate in this workshop. All supplies are included.&nbsp;

The poetic repetition and evocative jazz-like style of this canonic text mimics the harmful patterns and toxic ideologies perpetuated throughout American history. ‘The America Play’ is a daring exploration of the fractured stories that shape our nation from one of our most prominent American playwrights, Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner, Suzan-Lori Parks. Directed by HotHouse Member and Co-Artistic Director Lindsay Smiling (The Half-God of Rainfall), this play challenges us to redefine what it means to be American in the context of our current political landscape. The Wilma’s HotHouse ensemble brings this imaginative work to life, creating a space for active dialogue, catharsis, and deep connection with the audience.
